AN ASPIRING writer has bagged herself a B-grade AS level at just 14 years of age.

Ormiston Rivers Academy student Eden Pennycott, 14, has earnt herself a B in Creative Writing AS Level after sitting the exam several years early.

Eden, who is in Year 9 at the school, was entered into the exam as her teachers believed she had an ‘incredible gift’ for writing, and that she had the ability to be able to take on an advanced exam.

The creative writing exam consisted of two questions which had to be written about at length using techniques taught in English and writing classes.

Eden said: “I’ve been writing alongside school work since I was in primary school, I’ve always loved it, but it wasn’t until I got to Ormiston where teachers started encouraging me to take it on from just a side activity to school work.

“In the exam we had to write at length about two different subjects, so one I did was about a scientist winning a Nobel Prize, and I can’t remember the other one.

“It was a good challenge, I got to put my writing into good use to help me gain some good grades, and I’m really pleased with my B.”

Eden hopes to pursue writing as a career, either as a novelist or non-fiction writer. With the AS exam a success, she may take the A2 next year.

She added: “It’s so encouraging and it’s shown that I’m capable of reaching this level and that my writing is being recognised. We’ll see what the future holds, but if lessons carry on well I could definitely attempt the full A level next year.”

Terry Freelander, Head of English at Ormiston Rivers, said: “After several weeks we realised that Eden had a truly wonderful gift in her writing, even at such a young age. We knew we couldn’t let her skills go to waste, so we encouraged her to try for the AS Level exam.

“Creative Writing isn’t offered at GCSE level, and it was the next step up. Needless to say she has done incredibly well to achieve such a respectable grade at only 14.”
