PEOPLE are being reminded today is the final day they can register to vote in the general election.

On June 8 voters will go to the polls to elect their Member of Parliament in the general election.

Maldon District Council has urged residents to make sure they are registered in time.

The deadline for receipt of applications to register to vote is midnight on Monday 22 May.

If you are already registered to vote, you do not need to do this again unless you have moved address recently.

Anyone not registered to vote at their current address can register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote If you will be unable to cast your vote in person on June 8 then you can apply for either a postal, postal proxy or proxy vote.

In England, Scotland and Wales, the deadline to apply to vote by post and postal proxy for the general election is 5pm on Tuesday May 23.

Alternatively proxy voting allows you to nominate someone else to cast your vote for you by attending the polling station in your place. The deadline to apply to vote by proxy at the general election is 5pm on Wednesday May 31.
