THE Royal British Legion has reminded residents that it has purposely removed some of its poppy wreaths from a high street memorial.

The Essex branch of the Royal British Legion has recently removed the wreaths from the War Memorial on Maldon High Street, which is usual practice due to them becoming weathered.

The Victoria Cross wreath was removed earlier this month so that town mayor Richard Miller could personally lay it on the grave of Frederick Corbett VC at Maldon Cemetery.

An RBL spokesman said: "The local RBL branch have recently removed some of the poppy wreaths from the War Memorial, High Street, Maldon. This is usual practice for this time of year as the wreath become very weathered, but it is good to spread the word, as we often get some concerned calls from members of the public."
