PLANS to regenerate Burnham’s waterfront with a pontoon, visitor centre and new ferry crossing have been warmly welcomed.

The plans were put in front of Burnham Town Council at a meeting last week.

They have been thought up by the River Crouch Coastal Community Team (CCT).

Under the proposals, a ferry crossing would be installed to take visitors from Burnham to Wallasea Island, along with a new pontoon for the ferry to leave from and a visitor centre for the people boarding the ferry.

Burnham town mayor, Ron Pratt, believes the plans have great potential.

He said: “The scheme itself is a fantastic idea. It would completely revitalise the waterfront.

“It is part of a Government initiative that is trying to get businesses involved in improving the appeal of an area as far as tourists are concerned.

“It is still in its early stages at the moment but the possibility of linking Burnham with Wallasea Island is very exciting.

“The idea would see the creation of a new pontoon that would allow a ferry, which will have complete disabled access, to carry people across to the island.”

The plans would also see new pontoons on Wallasea Island and near Rochford.
