UNEMPLOYMENT figures for the Maldon district have slightly increased since January.

In the latest report from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) it has been revealed the total number of people out of work in the district is 355, an increase of 40 from this time last month.

The number of young people out of work remains steady, with 70 recorded 18-24 year olds currently seeking work.

Stuart Brown, of the DWP, said the raise was an "expected" seasonal shift in the post-festive weeks.

He said: "This time of year it's expected for more people to be out of work now the festive Christmas season has passed, it's a trend which has happened many years before now.

"The current rates for Maldon are still down around 15 per cent from this time last year, so there are always positives to take away from it.

"We'll be working with more organisations, companies and charities over the next few weeks with job fayres and other events to ensure we drive employment for people seeking work."
