A WORKSHOP teaching children how to care for and identify wild birds has been held in St Lawrence.

The event, run by resident, Jacqui Monk, was part of the RSPB’s Great Garden Bird Watch.

Children were taught how to make bird feeders, what food to give to birds and how to identify the different species in their gardens.

Jacqui Monk said: “The children made bird feeders out of recyclable materials, to start hanging in their gardens. They learnt how to identify the most common birds they will find in their gardens and how to make a bird bath from their dustbin lids at home.

“The children loved the fact that they should be feeding birds frozen peas instead of bread and many parents have said that they can easily make these bird feeders at home and so will be adding more to the garden.

“With the cold weather coming in it is really important to have as much food as possible available for our garden birds.”

The Big Garden Watch is taking place this weekend, and people are asked to spend one hour counting their garden birds before submitting their counts on the RSPB website.

Guides are available to help identify the birds by emailing Jacquelinemonk3@gmail.com.

The next nature event in St Lawrence will be held on February 17, where children can make hedgehog cafes, plant spring flowers and make musical shakers.
