AN angry resident has branded repair works at Burnham’s Riverside Park’s car park a disgrace.

Dennis Price, of Hornet Way, Burnham, is unhappy with the state of the town’s car park and feels more investment is needed from Maldon District Council.

In response to a complaint in last week’s Standard, Councillor Brenda Harker said work was being carried out to repair the car park at Riverside Park.

However, Mr Price said work is not up to scratch.

He said: “If that is what they call a satisfactory job they can keep it.

“They should be ashamed of themselves for letting it get that bad.

“The car park is in a shocking state. I do not think it has ever been worse. It looks awful.

“As soon as a car turns on it, the surface churns up like you are turning on gravel and you end up with these huge potholes.

“I know we do not charge for parking in Burnham but that is not an excuse to let it get this bad.

“They say their long-term plan in Burnham is tourism, then we offer visitors somewhere like this to park.”

Mr Price said the car park is part of a wider problem.

He agrees with other residents who say there is a disparity between the money spent in Maldon and Burnham.

He said: “There is only one guy over here who has to do everything. As well as the park he looks after the cemetery and other green spaces in the town.

“In Maldon you look at Promenade Park and it is a picture. Now another £250,000 is being invested, while I’d be surprised if we had £2.50 over here.

“If you look at how much Burnham residents pay compared to how much we get back it is disgraceful.”

Richard Holmes, director for community services at Maldon District Council, said “We intend to undertake some maintenance work on the Riverside Park car park early next year and we are aware the surface condition is poor.”
