YOUNGSTERS swapped classrooms for a council chamber when they staged a takeover challenge.

Pupils from Plume took over the chamber at Maldon District Council and held a student council meeting.

The meeting, chaired by head girl Yasmine Rassasse and head boy James Williams, discussed the best way the district council can work with young people.

Earlier in the day five students held interviews with members of district council staff to understand the work undertaken by officers and councillors.

Leader Miriam Lewis also met the students who asked her about her previous positions and motivation in her current role.

Ms Lewis said: “It is exciting to talk to young people at the beginning of their working lives and I hope I was able to impart some useful advice.

“Young people have a lot of options open to them, including further education and apprenticeships.”

The pupils were invited by council chairman Peter Elliott.

He added: “This was an interesting and valuable day for all involved, it is vital that the council considers the needs and aspirations of all Maldon district residents.

“Takeover day is a great challenge allowing us to hear the views of young people and provides young people an insight into the world of work.”
