MALDON celebrated the start of the Christmas season with a Shakespearean themed vintage fair and lights switch on.

The town gathered on the High Street last night to switch on Maldon’s Christmas lights at the annual Maldon Vintage Christmas Fair.

Shops along the High Street got into the spirit with window decorations, while stall holders lined the streets.

This year’s Shakespearean theme also saw a number of people in costume, with prizes handed out for the best.

Michael Pearlman, Chairman of the Maldon Vintage Christmas Committee, believes this year event was even better than the last.

He said: “Last night was absolutely outstanding. I was overwhelmed by the response. It was fantastic. I have spoken to a lot of people and they have said they are already looking forward to next year.

“I think because of last year’s success we got some great sponsors. That money was used to have extra things going on. We had Shakespearean actors, live tribute bands, and prizes for the best large shop, best small shop, best stall and best costume.

“Next year is going to be even better again. Tesco has made a big donation already, and the new Lidl store have said they want to get involved as well. I am confident it will be bigger and better again.”

The evening also saw the switch on of the Christmas lights, by Maldon Town Mayor, Richard Miller who said: “It was a fantastic evening. Everyone seemed to have a great time, there were so many people there. It was great to see them all enjoying themselves.”
