AN AUTHOR who grew up on a spritsail barge will be visiting Maldon to discuss the waters of Essex.

Nick Ardley, 61, was brought up on a Thames spritsail barge and spent many years of his childhood sailing through Thames estuary tidal creeks and rivers, as well as many exploits in rivers across Essex.

The event has been organised by Maldon-based charity Farleigh Hospice, where Nick will be attending to discuss the exploits of Essex waters as well as his book, Swinging the Lamp – Thames Estuary Tidal Tales.

Throughout his life Nick has continued to write and he sails as much as possible, whenever possible.

He has woven his hours out on the water into his many different stories, all based on history, fact and colourful observations of wherever he has gone.

Nick has written for various yachting, countryside and history magazines about his sailing and coastal cruising experiences, and he writes regularly for his Yacht Club magazine.

He will be at Farleigh Hospice on Colchester Road, Maldon, on Friday October 7 from 2.30pm.
