A LOWER speed limit must be introduced on Limebrook Way, a concerned councillor has claimed.

On Saturday four people were injured after a crash on the road.

A black Mini and a black Vauxhall Mokka collided in Limebrook Way at about 12.30pm.

In January Essex County Council approved plans to lower the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph on part of the road.

Now Maldon councillor Mark Heard has called for the speed limit to be lowered across the whole stretch of road as soon as possible, including where Saturday’s crash took place.

He said: “At the moment that road is a bypass and with all the building it is going to be right in the middle of a residential area.

“There is no relief road.

"Consequently we are going to get lorries and buses and everything else going through that residential area which will have houses on both sides.

"The reason we get chevrons on corners and different calming measures is because something has already happened.

“What we don’t want to have is a series of things that happen. I am calling for these traffic calming measures to be introduced as soon as possible.

“We do not want to have a repeat of this.”

Mr Heard has also suggested roundabouts at the two junctions of the estates on the road are introduced.

He added: “We have got 4,500 homes coming in the district in the next 15 years and clearly it is going to have a considerable impact on that road.”

An Essex County Council spokesman said: “We are sorry to hear about this incident and wish the young boy a full recovery.

“Our engineers working through the Safer Essex Roads Partnership will, as always following a serious collision, review the collision history along this section of road to determine if engineering remedial measures are required.”

Plans to turn the whole route into a 40mph zone were revised following an Essex Police objection.

Signs and footpaths are planned for parts of the road.
