BORIS Johnson and the Vote Leave campaign have been in Maldon this morning.

Mr Johnson joined Maldon MP and fellow Brexit campaigner John Whittingdale in the town ahead of Thursday's vote.

The Vote Leave campaign is on a whirlwind tour of the country in a final bid to secure backing for Brexit.

The Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP has been a vigorous campaigner for leaving the European Union in the nationwide referendum.

He met his supporters along with Maldon MP John Whittingdale at Hythe Quay outside The Jolly Sailor, as he believes Maldon has huge benefits for leaving the EU.

He said: “Maldon produces great things like sea salt, I even have some at home, and it’s a shame because we’re unable at the moment to do free trade deals with countries around the world, we can’t even do a deal with America.

“I think it would benefit exporters from Maldon if we had a global approach, and it would be useful as well to get rid of some of the bureaucracy that holds this country and the whole of Europe back.

“Furthermore, there are quite large sums of money we spend on the EU. It’s all about democracy, and the problem with the EU, and bureaucracy, is you can’t kick them out. That’s the problem.

“Unless you can do that, you can’t correct the mistakes they make. It’s a process of error correction. That has been lost at Brussels.”

Despite Mr Johnson’s opposing stance to Prime Minister David Cameron, who is campaigning for Britain to remain, he would not want to see him resign should Britain vote to leave.

He added: “Neither John Whittingdale nor I would want to see that at all. We’re hoping that in either circumstance that our Prime Minister stays in office.”
