A beloved family man and devoted sports supporter, who told “Christmas cracker” jokes, has died after a three-year battle with illness.
David Buckby, 65, died at his home in Longship Way, Maldon, on Monday, surrounded by his family.
His death, from pulmonary fibrosis, led to an outpouring of support online, including a tribute from Maldon and Tiptree Football Club.
His son, Richard, 19, said: “He was a comical guy with a great sense of humour, a kind, loving gentleman.
“You could never get bored of his jokes, they were the Christmas cracker kind.”
Mr Buckby worked for Britvic Soft Drinks, for 30 years as company secretary, before retiring eight years ago.
He was heavily involved in local football, assisting clubs Maldon Town and Tiptree United, before the two clubs amalgamated as Maldon &Tiptree.
The club held a minute’s silence at Tuesday’s game against Cheshunt in remembrance.
