A GRANDMOTHER will take part in a 50 mile walking challenge to raise money for the air ambulance trust that tried to save her grandson’s father’s life.

Rebecca Purcell, of Maldon, is training for the Base 2 Base Challenge to raise money for the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust.

The challenge starts at North Weald, home of the Herts Air Ambulance, and covers 50 miles over three days, following the Essex Way and finishing at the Essex Air Ambulance Base in Earls Colne.

Mrs Purcell said: “I love walking and had decided that this year I was going to push myself to do things a bit more out of my comfort zone, get out and do different things, so this fitted the bill.

“To help train for Base 2 Base we walk at least twice a week in the evening, eight miles around the sea wall.

“At weekends we are now doing consecutive days, averaging 14 to 16 miles, we have become walk-a-holics.

“I have donated to Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust since my daughter’s fiancé died tragically in June 2012.

“Although his life was not saved, we were consoled by the thought that the Air Ambulance attended.

“My daughter was 20 weeks pregnant at the time, they planned to marry in December 2012.

“We now have a beautiful little boy called Oscar who will be three in November, so I am walking for Oscar’s Daddy, Geoff.”

The Base 2 Base Challenge takes place from July 31 to August 2, including two nights camping.

The event is sponsored by Alston’s Upholstery and Medical Aviation Services and most equipment is provided including tents, catering facilities and meals, plus a full support team.

The registration fee is £65 per person with a minimum fundraising target of £350 for individual walkers.
