MP John Whittingdale was “astonished” to be given a cabinet position in David Cameron’s newly announced government.

Mr Whittingdale, 55, who received 60.4 per cent of votes in the Maldon district in the election, was appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, on Monday.

Previously chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, Mr Whittingdale said he was delighted with the offer, which came “out of the blue”.

He said: “I had no clue this was coming.”

His department covers First World War commemoration.

He said: “I intend to ensure Stow Maries gets a mention.”
