A village pub has re-opened under new management after plans to demolish it were dropped.

Alex Chambers, 34, has bought a six-year lease from David Clay, owner of The Compasses in Colchester Road, Great Totham.

In 2013, Mr Clay had applied to demolish the pub and put nine houses in its place, but nearly 300 people signed a petition in objection.

Mr Clay then withdrew his plans just days before they were set to go before a council committee.

Mr Chambers said: “The pub cellar and kitchen have gone through a complete refurbishment.

“It’s a lovely pub.

“Everything we’re doing will be as locally sourced as possible."
