Hundreds of pounds have been spent on gift cards to reward staff at Maldon District Council.

A Freedom of Information request by the Standard has revealed how numerous members of staff have access to the equivalent of council credit cards.

In the financial year of 2013/14, nearly £70,000 was spent on these cards, which includes money splashed on gift cards as part of a “staff reward scheme”.

In September and October of 2013, the council’s finance officer spent £725 on gift cards.

Richard Holmes, director of customers and community at the council, said: “Our staff are our greatest asset and I feel that recognition of exceptional contribution or long service to the council is appropriate."

Staff have also reaped rewards for long service thanks to spending by the human resources department.

In just four months, payment cards were used to pay for £1,933 worth of awards.

Staff are presented with gifts of their choice worth £400 for 20 years’ service, £600 for 30 years and £800 for 40 years.
