Maldon residents are recycling ten fewer tonnes of food waste a month than in the past, new figures reveal.
Maldon District Council has insisted the year-on-year drop was down to residents becoming more aware of food waste and buying less produce as a result.
The authority picked up 112.9 tonnes of leftover food in an average month in 2013, compared to just an average of 102.3 tonnes between January and November last year.
A spokesman said: "It is quite normal to see a change in behaviour and we encourage our residents to reduce the amount of waste they produce."
