TWO families were made homeless on Christmas Day following a fire in Tiptree.

The fire started in an outbuilding just after 7pm in Oak Road.

It spread flooding two flats with smoke.

The flats were evacuated safely but the damage meant the families living there were unable to return home.

One flat belongs to a couple and the other a mother and son with a dog.

The Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support team were called to help the families find somewhere else to go.

The fire was put out by 8.40pm by crews from Tiptree and Tollesbury.

A faulty tumble dryer has been blamed for the fire.
