A new adult learning centre has opened its doors in Maldon.

The new Maldon “multicentre” offers courses ranging from beauty, cake decorating, art, sewing, IT, languages, supported learning and much more.

Essex County Council’s Adult Community Learning Centre is now operating in Carmelite House, the former office accommodation above the local library.

Councillor Ray Gooding, cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, said: “I am delighted learners will have the benefit of a modern, purpose-designed teaching environment.

“The new accommodation will allow us to provide nine classrooms suited to the proposed curriculum.

“The building lies within metres of The Friary and is more visible to the general public using the adjacent car park and other town centre facilities.”

The Maldon multicentre will also include space for the Essex registration service.

The move to provide multicentres in more modern community premises is designed to make best use of all council buildings and a key part of the authority’s drive to save at least £237 million over the next four years through changing the way it delivers services.
