A listed building currently used as an adult education college could be sold.

Essex County Council is moving classes from The Friary in Carmelite Way, Maldon, across the road to Carmelite House in White Horse Lane, which also houses the town library.

It will have nine purpose built classrooms on the first and second floors.

The council warned “it is most likely” The Friary, which is Grade II listed, will be sold.

A spokesman said: “It is not on the market yet. It would only be put on the market if and when it is confirmed there is no other county council use and the building is declared surplus to the council’s requirements.”

Classes will be moved to Carmelite House in time for September.

The building is being adapted to provide disabled access and the existing lift is being refurbished.
