Flood victims could be entitled to a council tax discount under a new scheme.

Maldon District Council’s finance committee is due to discuss the introduction of a new council tax flood relief policy tonight following Prime Minister David Cameron’s announcement in February that the Government would make funding available for such discounts.

The support would be limited to homes affected by flooding during severe weather between December and March.

The district council could grant a 100 per cent discount for three months for any home where flood water has entered the internal living area and the extent of flooding is more than minimal, or access to the home has been severely restricted as a result of flooding.

If already paid, the council taxpayer may be entitled to a refund. Residents who believe they meet the criteria will be asked to complete an application form and submit evidence.

The report due to go before the finance committee on Tuesday said that although the council was aware of some damage to homes in the district, it was unaware of any cases that would qualify for the new scheme.

The closing date for applications is likely to be June 30.
