Businesses across Tendring are being urged to take on apprentices in a bid to cut the number of young people who are out of work.
The district has the highest number of so-called NEETS – young people not in education, employment or training - in the county.
Tendring Council said it wants to increase opportunities for youngsters by providing apprenticeships in a wide range of careers.
As part of Apprenticeship Week, which runs from February 6 to 10, the council’s Career Track programme will be inviting employers to Clacton Town Hall to find out about taking on an apprentice.
Debianne Messenger, Career Track’s work-based learning manager, said 15 per cent of 16 to 19 year olds in Tendring are not in education, employment or training - compares to just over seven per cent nationally.
The latest unemployment figures also show almost 12 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds in the district are now on the dole, compared with the national figure of just eight per cent.

Fantastic. Businesses across tendring are currently fighting to keep their heads above water. So now the council wants to put the onus of the dire job situation as their responsibility.
Modern apprenticeships are a joke. They run for less than 12 months and provide only a very basic training. Certainly not enough to qualify a young person for a proper job with proper skills.
We own a business on Dovercourt High Street. Today we have ice and snow which fell two days ago covering the pavements which have not been cleared at all by the council.
We have an abundance of closed down empty shops in the town. We have zealous parking wardens who have issued £18000 worth of tickets over a 9 month period.
If TDC want to help this town and its community then I do think some serious rethinking needs to be done.
