THE Mayflower 400 project has been labelled as the “once in a lifetime opportunity to set a fantastic legacy for Harwich”.

It was almost 400 years ago since the Mayflower sailed from England to America.

Harwich played a vital role in the iconic story, with the ship and her captain Christopher Jones hailing from the town.

Mayflower 400 includes 14 destinations around the UK, Holland and the USA with a link to the voyage working together in a bid to attract American tourists during the anniversary year of 2020.

More than 100 businesses from around Harwich attended a conference on Monday at Harwich International Port about getting on board with the project to encourage tourism in the town.

Zoe Fairley, portfolio holder for regeneration and inward investment for Tendring Council, said Harwich plays such an important part in the story of the Mayflower.

She said: “We are going to put Harwich on the map and make it a tourist destination. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to set a fantastic legacy for Harwich and for the community.

“We are using the project as a catalyst to generate some excitement for the town and create a sense of pride.”

Charles Hackett, CEO of the Mayflower 400, said: “ This commemoration is national, international and local to support the local business economy through heritage and tourism.

“This project is not just about the past, it is about the idea and values of Harwich.”

Paul Milsom, chairman of the Harwich and Dovercourt Tourism Group, said the project is all about getting local people to understand Harwich has a lot to offer.

He said: “We are trying to give a clear message that we are trying to focus people on the Mayflower 400 project as Harwich is a really important part of the ship’s history.

“As we approach 2020 we want Harwich to look its best. It is about smaller actions and if the whole of the community gets involved and on board we are we are likely to see it happen.”

Harwich councillor Ivan Henderson closed the conference, calling on residents and local business to grab this opportunity with both hands.
