A CONCERNED pensioner fears the road outside his home will continue to crumble away if it is not resurfaced soon.

Robert Sexton, 69, claims the stretch of road down his street, has been deteriorating with patchy holes forming for months.

Mr Sexton, of Highfield Avenue, Dovercourt, said he first reported the crumbling state of the road to Essex County Council last November.

He said he is worried that if nothing is done to resurface the road, the problem will continue to get worse and spread down the street.

“There must be about ten or more patches of surface deteriorating on the road outside my house,” he added.

“The road is just crumbling away and the top surface of the road is breaking away so there is grit everywhere.

“The surface appears to be breaking up and spreading all over the place.”

Mr Sexton, who lives at home with his wife, believes the road was resurfaced about five years ago and is deteriorating due to the cold weather.

He said: “Everyone is saying the surface is cracking and these patches just keep appearing.

“If nothing is done, it will get worse, and it will deteriorate the whole way along the road.”

Mr Sexton described the holes as a couple of feet long and wide, and claims there are about ten of them.

An Essex Highways spokesman said: “Highfields Avenue is inspected every three months and there are only relatively minor defects reported. There is work pending to repair the kerb and fill in some cracks on the pavements.

“Any problems on the road should be reported to us online at www.essex.gov.uk/highways.”
