A CAMPAIGNER is calling for urgent action to be taken on two roads that he says become badly flooded when it rains.

Rainwater has been flooding into the middle of School Lane and Grange Road, in Lawford, which residents claim makes them turn into “an ice rink” in freezing temperatures.

Paul Barran, of School Lane, said he first contact Anglian Water to get the drains cleared so the flooding will stop last month.

The 48-year-old said: “It happens every time it rains. The drains and roads are badly designed in School Lane.”

Mr Barran said Anglian Water came to look at the flooding a couple of days after he reported it to them and a member of staff cleared the drains.

But Mr Barran, who works as a marketing business partner at Jisc, said he was then told to contact the Essex Highways Agency for help.

He said: “I think there are two main issues. One is that it is a poor design, as the road is lower outside my house in School Lane, so it’s in a pool whenever it rains, and secondly the drains are never cleared of leaves.

“As you can imagine when it freezes, it is like a ice rink.

“Also it covers the footpath as you can see the postman can’t get across without getting wet.

“Now the playing field car park has been resurfaced, it also adds to the extra water running off.

“We have had to unblock our drains four times this year personally.

“In the 23 years we have lived here it always floods, but now it is the whole road, not just our side.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “A drain cleaning crew will attend within two weeks to clean out the drain and to check that the pipe work is not damaged.”

Anglian Water confirmed the company is not responsible for the issue.
