A VILLAGE has been blighted with night-time road chaos, speeding lorries and noise.

Residents in Lawford have taken to social media to hit out at the heavy goods vehicles driving along Wignall Street all through the night.

Julie Thomas said: “There were hundreds of them starting from 11pm and carrying on until 4am.

“They were speeding down well past the speed limit and the noise level was horrendous.”

Sarah Thomas said: “The A12 has been closed every night - its a nightmare. They are diverting traffic off junction 29 and through Colchester.”

Villagers say there have been traffic jams at 11pm and excessive noise from the engines.

Sharon Enfield-Damar Richer said: “Lorries and traffic were at a standstill on Wignall Street, so backed right up, I imagine waiting for the railway crossing.”

Leah King said: “Seriously, there is no need for the speed of them. “Already looks to have been a crash, lots of glass on Wignall Street.”

Charlotte Taylor-Evans said: “It was so loud! The HGVs were going past all night.”

Lawford councillor Andy Baker said roadworks on the A12 mean traffic is coming through the village.

“Nobody knew it was coming,” he said. “But there is a weight restriction map that covers the east of the A120 all the way to Harwich and up to Elmstead - it’s huge.

“It’s for over 7.5 tonnes, though if they are delivering it’s fine.

“But these lorries aren’t.

“But if they are diverting the traffic through here it’s making a mockery of that restriction.”

A spokesman for Highways England said the only ongoing roadworks were on a slip road at Capel St Mary with no diversion going to Lawford.
