BOUNCY castles, face painting and stalls full of cakes and candy floss attracted hundreds of residents to a village park fundraiser.

The day of family fun was held at Parkeston Welfare Park to raise funds towards the £2,000 annual cost of insurance to keep it open.

Bill Davidson, chairman of the Parkeston Welfare Park’s committee which organised the event, said: “We had loads of people come down and we raised £1,300.

“I’d say we had about 400 people there at least as people were coming and going.

“It went really really well, it was a superb day and we couldn’t have wished for better weather.

“We had stalls and a beer tent, face painting. I’m so pleased with how it went, it’s the best one we’ve ever had.”

The site of the park was purchased in 1923 by three local men remortgaging their private homes to provide a safe play area for the village.

Since 2011 it has had a new multi-use games area, children’s play area, outdoor gym, football pitch and nature park.

For the past two and a half years the committee has organised events, including two fun days, throughout the year to raise the funds needed to cover the insurance and pay for maintenance and repairs to the park.
