CAMPAIGNING councillors are celebrating victory in a two-year fight to see speed restrictions introduced on a “dangerous” road in Dovercourt.

Parents and residents have long raised fears a child could be knocked down and suffer serious injuries in Parkeston Road because of the speed at which motorists drive.

Lollipop ladies help youngsters cross the road to get to Spring Meadow Primary School.

In 2013 Tendring’s Local Highways Panel announced a speed survey would be carried out on the stretch of the road.

The results were used to draw up plans for the future of the road and Essex Highways set aside funds to install traffic calming measures.

Speed warning signs have been designed to enhance the existing school crossing patrol signs on the road.

The signs will serve as an advisory message for motorists to drive at 20mph when the lights flash.

Harwich county councillor Ivan Henderson has welcomed the new 20mph restriction and no parking signs.

He said: “There have been so many near-misses along that road.

“We have been pushing for Parkeston Road to be made safer for well over a year.

“There have been plenty of problems with people parking inappropriately outside the corner shop.

“This will help to make sure there is no illegal parking anywhere on the zig-zag lines.

“We would like to ask for people’s cooperation in now observing the speed limit and making the road a safer place.”

Mr Henderson, who is also a town and district councillor, added: “We have been putting the pressure on to get this done for some time and I am pleased it is finally in place.

“Parents and schools have been calling for safety measures.

“The lollipop lady at the school crossing has had plenty of trouble with speeding drivers and it would have just been a matter of time before a child was hurt.”
