A CHILDREN’S carnival will join its tenth anniversary celebrations with a commemoration of the Kindertransport operation.

The Harwich carnival will run alongside the planned commemorati ve events in the town on July 1, marking a year since the death of Sir Nicholas Winton.

He was responsible for saving the lives of 669 Czech children by organising safe passage for them into Britain through Harwich.

The date also marks the 77th year since the largest single Kinder transpor t arrived in Harwich with 241 children.

The carnival brings together 1,000 children for a day of festivities that celebrates young people, the arts and the beauty of the town.

When contemplating a theme for the carnival this year, organisers at Manningtree-based Grand Theatre of Lemmings thought it should reflect this special anniversary .

The theatre’s Mandy Rose said: “This year’s theme of Harwich Children’ s Carnival is Children of the World.

“When Europe is being challeng ed by its worst refug ee crisis since the Second World War, we feel as though we should do all what we can to lift spirits, raise awareness and help each other .”

The carnival parade will start at Harwich Green on July 1 at 2pm before winding its way through historic Harwich and arriving back at the green.

There will be festivities throughout the day.
