FUMING residents hope new restrictions will stop lorry drivers blocking the entrance of a busy road.

Residents are fed up of lorry drivers stopping at the entrance of Williamsburg Avenue, near the Lidl supermarket, where they take up pavement and road space.

The North Essex Parking Partnership is drawing up plans for parking restrictions.

Valerie Sharpe, who lives on the road, said: “No one can see coming out or going into the roundabout at the A120.

“When people are trying to get out of Lidl they can’t see what they’re driving into.

“About two weeks ago a trucker parked on the corner of the avenue, I said ‘excuse me do you know this is a residential area’ and he just said ‘so what.’ “They shouldn’t be parked here even if there’s no double yellow lines.

“A couple of times people have had to get them to move because they can’t get their cars past.

“The police can’t do anything because there’s no restrictions.

“It’s not just a danger to drivers, we get ladies with prams who have to leave the pavement sometimes just to get around these huge lorries.”

Ivan Henderson, Essex county councillor for Harwich, said he has fought with residents and fellow district councillors to get parking restrictions approved by the parking partnership.

He said: “When we visited the site with officers we discussed having the restrictions from the roundabout all the way round into the estate, so lorries cannot just move further down the road and park there.

“They have been parking on the pavements, leaving rubbish behind, and there has been damage to one of the lampposts there.

“We understand they’ve got to stop somewhere on the way from the port, it’s just really dangerous to stop here.”

A spokesman for the North Essex Parking Partnership confirmed officers are drafting plans for restrictions, to be advertised later in the year to give people a chance to support or object the plans.
