A FORMER factory is set to be knocked down and replaced with 27 new homes.

Colne Housing Society has been given the go ahead to demolish the old Bernard Uniforms factory building in Harbour Crescent, Harwich and put up a mixture of houses and flats for people on Tendring Council’s housing waiting list.

Original plans for the site, which has sat unused and derelict since it closed in 2007 becoming a magnet for vandals, sparked 252 letters of objection.

Colne Housing held a public exhibition in March with about 100 residents turning out to see the designs.

They then amended the plans, removing commercial floor space and adding an extra two bedroom house while scrapping a three bedroom home.

A spokesman for Tendring Council said the onjections were then reduced down to 67.

He added: "After considering all the various issues Tendring Council approved the scheme with 24 conditions imposed.

"It was felt that the application represents a sustainable use development which complies with both national and local plan policy and reflects the requirements of the adopted Harwich Master Plan.

"Its design and layout creates a safe, visually attractive and functional development which respects and enhances the conservation area."
