VETERANS turned out in force for a special event to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Almost 50 veterans from across Tendring were presented with medals, which had been made especially for the event at Clacton’s Princes Theatre on Saturday.
Veterans met up with old colleagues to share experiences and enjoyed a buffet and dance.
The event, hosted by Tendring Council and the Royal British Legion, saw the theatre plunged into darkness for a recording of Winston Churchill’s famous victory speech. It was all staged to celebrate this year’s 70th anniversary of VE Day.
Jamie Robinson, branch chairman for the Manningtree and District Royal British Legion, said it was a way of marking an important day in the country’s history.
He said: “I know from the feedback we got that all those who attended enjoyed the whole event and they thanked those who had put it on.
“It was a special occasion for them to remember and a time to share experiences with others who had gone through the same war days.”
