FED-UP residents in a conservation area are calling on police to crackdown on “nightmare” revellers vomiting, shouting and swearing on their door steps after booze-fuelled nights out.

People living in Church Street, Harwich, say they have had enough of the disorder on the street in the early hours of Saturdays and Sundays when pubs in the area close for the night, and they want a stronger police presence in town to deal with troublemakers.

David Richards, who lives on the street, said: “It is worrying because when you are in bed you don’t know what they’re doing when they are screaming and shouting and coming down the road.

“There is also a lot of rubbish and broken glass up near the church where I like to walk the dog.

“A couple of weeks ago someone had even been to the toilet outside.

“It is a nightmare and it is getting worse and worse.

“A stronger police presence would be good, but sometimes if you call them they do not turn up.”

District commander Russ Cole said he felt problems were being caused by a small minority of people.

He said: “We are aware of the issues residents are facing and are committed to bringing people carrying out public order offences to book.

“We are working with onlicense and off-license outlets which sell alcohol to try to ensure they know their responsibilities and they are not selling to people who are already drunk or underage.

“Most of Harwich is a very flourishing area and I believe it is just a minority of people – some of whom may not even be old enough to drink alcohol – who are spoiling it.

Mr Cole urged anyone who experiences antisocial behaviour to report it to Harwich police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
