CROWDS lined the streets to welcome the new Mayor and Mayoress of Harwich.

Councillor Dave McLeod put on the red mayoral robes and gold chain before leading a parade to St Nicholas’ Church yesterday.

A formal council meeting in the Guildhall started proceedings, before a short church service was held.

Watched by other town councillors, friends and families, Mr McLeod officially replaced Alan Todd as mayor.

Mr McLeod and new mayoress Dee King then threw kitchels from the balcony of the Guildhall to a crowd of adults and children waiting below. The unique tradition has been upheld in the town for centuries.

It will be Mr McLeod’s fifth time as Harwich mayor – having already served in 1998, 2002, 2007 and 2013.
