A GREAT grandmother who retired to the seaside has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Lillian Constance Smith, known as Connie, was born in Highgate, North London.

The youngest of three sisters, Connie went to work at a printing office in London - where she met her husband, John.

In 1939, then part in charge of the office, she left to get married.

The couple had two sons and later became grandparents and great grandparents.

After years living in Enfield, the pair retired to Frinton on Sea and in 2011 Connie moved to Alexandra House in Dovercourt.

On Friday she was treated to a high tea style 100th birthday party with banners, balloons and champagne.

Connie, whose sister Ida lived to 92, and Marjorie to 102, said: "I'm delighted at turning 100 and additionally surprised I'm still here.

"I'm extremely overwhelmed and happy with over 40 cards and all of my lovely flowers."
