A BUMPER art exhibition and book sale saw hundreds of visitors scour the shelves and support a historic church.

The annual Easter event, which runs over the four-day bank holiday weekend, sees a range of artwork on show by local artists and donated books for sale.

Proceeds go towards the upkeep of the 208-year-old Manningtree Methodist Church, which hosts the exhibition and sale.

Organiser Brian Cuthbertson said: “We were quite busy all over the weekend.

“By it being chilly, people didn’t go to the seaside or anything, so it probably worked to our advantage.

“We had just short of 400 paintings and we sold a good percentage of them.”

Organiser Gordon Todd said 600 books had been sold, raising more than £400 for the church.

“It was a very good day,” he added.
