A BATTLE of the best will be waged on Harwich's waves when the town hosts its first ever international windsurfing championship.

Some of the best windsurfers in the world are set to launch from Dovercourt beach as part of the competition on May 16 and 17.

With top speeds of up to 50mph in the sport, riders will be hoping for raging winds along the coast as they take on Round Three of the BSA Slalom Championships.

Hosted by Quiver Windsurfing at Dovercourt Boating Lake the event has professional and amateur conmpetitors as well as fun races like Master Blaster for the less advanced.

Organiser Darren Herbert, who launched Quiver Windsurfing last May, said: "Believe it or not Dovercourt Bay is perfect for the racing side of windsurfing.

"The wind directions are strong North easterly winds sweeping across from Felixstowe and the south easterly coming around from Walton-on-Naze point."

It is hoped the event will encourage even more people to take up the sport.
