FAMILIES on benefits could be rehomed in Harwich with a new development planned for a former factory site.

The old Bernard Uniforms factory, which has sat unused and derelict since it closed in 2007, has been a magnet for vandals.

Now Colne Housing has submitted plans to Tendring Council to transform the eyesore on Main Road.

If approved the housing association would knock down the former factory and build two one-bedroom and six two-bedroom flats, as well as 12 two-bedroom and seven three-bedroom houses.

Chief executive of Colne Housing, Mark Powell Davies, said: “We are hoping to build a mixture of houses and flats which will all be for rent by people on the Tendring housing waiting list.”
