THE site of a vital new roundabout at an accident blackspot is set to be announced as early as January, it has been revealed.

Talks on the details of the long-term safety work on the A120 at Hare Green and Pellens Corner will be held in a matter of weeks.

The announcement comes just days after the latest smash at the danger junction near Great Bromley, which saw two people taken to Colchester General Hospital after a two-car crash.

After the accident on Tuesday, Harwich MP Bernard Jenkin said discussions with the Highways Agency about the round-about would take place early next year. “It is a huge relief no one was seriously hurt, but it was another serious accident,” he said.

“I have already spoken with the Department of Transport and e-mailed the Minister for Transport, John Hayes, and asked him why there has been such a long delay.

“The Highways Agency is ready to fix a date for consultation on the roundabout, hopefully that will happen in January.

“It has all taken far too long – a roundabout is the only thing which will stop the accidents happening.”

Highways Agency asset manager Andy Jobling said: “Our thoughts are with those affected by this collision.

“As I am sure you can all appreciate, I cannot comment on the circumstances surrounding this incident until the police have concluded their investigations.
“With regard to our meeting to discuss the longterm proposals, I am liaising
with Mr Jenkin’s office to identify potential dates.

“Previously some councillors have asked that we meet prior to confirming the location of the roundabout, therefore it is my intention not to issue a statement until we have met and have had the opportunity to offer comments. We have taken notice of the suggestions made when we met earlier this year and incorporated these into our designs.

“Following this meeting we can then look at holding a public information event
to provide residents the opportunity to view our proposals and ask any questions.”
