A TRUNK road dubbed as being the answer to regeneration in Harwich and even the whole of North Essex may miss out on a major cashpot announced by Prime Minister David Cameron.

The A120 is set to be dualled from Harwich to Hare Green by Hutchison Ports as a condition of its planned container port build at Bathside Bay.

However, while residents are left to wait for the development, which has mothballed due to the economic climate, a £15billion road building scheme has been announced to deal with around 100 of the worse “pinch-points” on England’s roads.

Mr Cameron told business leaders cash would be spent by the end of the decade on schemes thought to include extra lanes on motorways and trunk roads to speed up journey times.

But road campaigners have called on the Government to listen to concerns over the A120 and make a major investment in the road, which has been branded as “disgraceful”.

John Brown, who has been calling for the A120 to be dualled and improved for more than a decade, said: “I honestly believe Hutchison Ports would be able to go ahead with the container port if they didn’t have to dual the road.

“The state of the road now is not even an A-road – improvements could regenerate the whole of the North Essex.”
