FITNESS-CONSCIOUS youngsters have become the first pupils in the country to be named as youth health champions.

Pupils from Manningtree High School have been trained to act as health advisers to their peers on lifestyle choices and behaviours.

The pupils have undertaken 40 hours of extra studying, to teach them the consequences of unhealthy behaviours such as smoking, unhealthy diets and alcohol abuse, and how to support those who engage in such behaviour.

They have now been awarded the Royal Society for Public Health level two qualification by chief executive of Public Health England Duncan Selbie.

He said: “I am immensely impressed by their commitment to others and the dedication these young people showed in undertaking this course on top of all their other studies, which is no mean feat.”

Essex County Council’s cabinet member for education, Ray Gooding, added: “I am delighted that Manningtree School is the first in the country to achieve this award.

“Congratulations to the school and the individual youth health champions who are fantastic role models for promoting healthy lifestyles among young people."
