A CHILDREN’S attraction is set to close because of crippling insurance costs.

Dovercourt Skating Rink on Lower Marine Parade will be open to the public for the last time on October 3 after insurance costs rose to more than £10,000 per year following an accident three years ago.

The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, leases the rink from Tendring Council and spokesman John Brown is furious with a lack of support from the leader Mick Page.

“In May this year I met with him and was advised by the insurance company to ask if we could be covered by the council’s blanket insurance policy which would help reduce the cost,” he said.

“He refused point blank to help us.

“When we took it over it was an empty shell and we salvaged 30 pairs of skates but now it has been totally revamped with new kitchen units, equipment and facilities.

“We have been asked to give it back to the council exactly how we found it.”

Council leader Mick Page said he had visited the rink earlier this year to discuss the situation and hopes to find another group for the facility.

He said: “I am hoping we can find someone who will keep it open the majority of the time because it is an important attraction for the district.”
