A RESIDENT who called for his town council to be investigated has spoken about his concerns after being accused of wasting time and money.

Dave Rutson, of Highfield Avenue, was concerned about ongoing work on nearby Manor Lane giving access to buildings behind the old Magistrates’ court and claims the Harwich Town Council spent £20,000 building a road which was not fit for purpose.

“This has now been going on for two years,” he said.

“Initially they wanted to put in a footpath but they built a 12 metre road and from that they had to choose three tenders and made the wrong choice.

“The road was not fit for purpose to drive vehicles on and it is illegal to drive on Manor Lane because it is a public footpath.

“This was a huge problem and the best thing to do to fix it was to build a footpath like the one in place now originally.”

Mr Rutson was worried public money had been wasted so felt the only option was to call in an auditor but has since been accused of wasting public money by councillors.

The official opinion from the external auditor said: “In our opinion, the information in the annual return is in accordance with proper practices and no matters have come to our attention giving cause for concern that relevant legislation and regulatory requirements have been met.”
