Rail staff to ballot for strike action

STAFF on the Greater Anglia rail franchise are to be balloted for industrial action over Olympic payments.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT)will vote on strike action and action short of a strike after reps rejected an offer from the company on Olympics recognition and reward payments.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said: "Greater Anglia have confronted us with an offer which they knew full well would be totally unacceptable.

"As a consequence we now have no option but to move to an urgent ballot for both strike action and action short of a strike to reinforce our case for a fair and unified settlement."

A Greater Anglia spokesperson said: "We're surprised to hear the RMT are intending to organise a ballot as we have not received any formal notification from the union of their intention to do so.

"We will continue to progress the constructive discussions which are taking place over this matter with the RMT and our staff representatives."

They want extra money for just working their normal hours because the Olympics is on…

I hope their cars break down and the garage charges them double for the same reason!!

So if they are busier and the commuters can't get seats can we claim for some money back because of the Olympics ?? I think not. What about those of us who have been inconvenienced whilst the upgrade on the line for the olympics has taken place. Have we had anything in return ? NO !Bob Crowe and his merry men should be told to shove it and if they go on strike I hope the press will have a field day as they will be an embarrassment to this country.

The payments are in return for not taking any annual leave over that time. Maybe people should get their facts right before spouting rubbish.

If they can justify additional pay because the trains will be busy, perhaps their pay should be reduced when they are driving trains with empty seats.

I like 'Ian P's view. Less pay when empty.

So they can't take leave. Boo hoo. It's only a few weeks and loads are effected, nurses, doctors, police, ambulance, to name a few of the important ones.

Greater anglia just offer a service if moving people. Nothing life saving there.

They should be ashamed and will get zero support from the thousands heading to work everyday during the games.

geater anglia going on strike they are always on srtike the trains never run to time or always canclled more money for working longer hours i dont see c2c haveing the strike and they are bearing the brunt of it with olympics at leigh on sea and west ham is going to be packed too
