A NEW programme to highlight the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle is being delivered in schools.

The Active Hearts programme is being delivered by Fusion Lifestyle in six of the district's schools - Belchamp St Paul, Ridgewell, Beckers Green, Richard De Clare, De Vere and Lyons Hall.

The programme is in line with the national curriculum and will initially be delivered in the schools which are taking part in the Livewell Child project.

Councillor Peter Tattersley, responsible for health and communities, said: "I am very pleased to be working in partnership with Fusion Lifestyle and the schools involved.

"Obesity can lead to a number of potentially life-threatening conditions therefore this co-ordinated approach to health and wellbeing will strengthen the message that we all need to take care of ourselves to keep healthy."

The five week scheme is aimed at Year Five students, with each of the five lessons lasting one hour and consisting of classroom activities followed by a practical session.

Clare Popperwell, sports and community development manager at Fusion Lifestyle, said: "We value the support from the schools involved in encouraging children to live an active lifestyle.

"We are sure the children will have fun whilst learning the importance of keeping active and eating well to keep our bodies fit and healthy."
