A KART racing schoolboy who dreams of becoming the next Lewis Hamilton bounced back from a ban after he was diagnosed with diabetes to win his first full race meeting.

Matt Hyde, 10, of St Peter’s View, Sible Hedingham, started racing at Buckmore Park Kart Club, in Kent, when he was six.

The St Peter’s Primary School pupil was competing in Motorsport Association (MSA) races until November, when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

MSA rules mean people diagnosed with insulin dependency must wait six months for assessment before having their licence reinstated.

He is now waiting to find out when he can get his licence back, but at the weekend he swept the board at the first round of the Lydd Summer Championships in Kent.

Halstead Gazette:

Proud mum Sophie Hyde, 43, said: “When we first found out he was ob- viously upset and he now has to inject himself four times a day.

“We had a few tears but he took it on the chin and just got on with it.”

Matt broke his wrist in July 2014 when he was hit by another kart at 50mph and thrown out.

Mrs Hyde said: “We worked really hard to get his confidence back. It took him quite a while to get over that.

“To then be told he couldn’t take part on MSA races was a big blow to him. But we will do what we can in the meantime.”

Accounts assistant Sophie and dad Rob, 44, were on hand to see their son win and treated him to his favourite snack to celebrate – pizza.

She said: “We would love to get sponsorship to help Matt fulfil his dream. It’s more than a hobby. It all started because his dad is a complete petrol-head as well.

“When he was about two-and-a- half he said ‘Dad, will you teach me to be an F1 driver?’”
