RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a car crashed into two garden walls.

The car ended up destroying two brick walls along Beridge Road, Halstead, at the junction with Stanley Road after swerving to avoid a car coming out of the junction.

Residents were thankful no children had been hurt as parents had been collecting their youngsters from nearby Holy Trinity Primary School minutes before.

Iain McGuirke, of Halstead, drove past shortly after the incident which happened at 3.30pm on Tuesday.

He said: “The car seemed to have left the road and mounted some garden walls.

“It looked a right old mess.

“Police were there but by the looks of it, it’s lucky no-one got run over.

“The car was kind of sat on top of the garden walls but only a foot or so from the front door of a house.

“There were still children being collected but thankfully most had gone by that point.”

Graham Kench, 62, lived next door to the house where the crash happened.

He said: “I was on the way back from the shops and the car was parked up on the wall right in front of the house.

“I thought ‘Oh, crikey’.

“It was lucky no-one was hurt and there were no children going past at the time.

“If she had been going a bit faster she might have gone into the front door of the house.”

Mums have been campaigning for the speed limit to be reduced from 30mph along the road to 20mph over safety concerns, although there is no indication that speed was a factor in this crash.
