BRAINTREE’S MP has branded the A120 “unacceptable” after four people were injured in a crash.

James Cleverly has written to Chancellor George Osborne to plead for cash to fix the A120 between Braintree and Colchester when he announces his budget later this year.

The call follows a three car crash on Saturday afternoon between Braintree and Bradwell on Saturday afternoon which saw one patient taken to hospital with chest injuries.

Mr Osborne has already pledged £5 million toward a feasibility study into dualling the road but Mr Cleverly said more money should be allocated now so work can begin when the report is delivered next year.

In his letter, seen by the Times, he states: “It would be unacceptable for me as the Member of Parliament for Braintree, not to request urgent action from the government. In short, the status quo is unacceptable and improvements are essential.”

Mr Cleverly’s letter adds the feasibility study was widely welcomed.

But it adds: “However, as this road continues to place drivers including many of my own constituents at risk, I ask that this road be recognised as a priority for future road investments for both economic and safety reasons.”

Mr Cleverly said the latest crash, which happened between the Cherry Lane garden centre and the Dolphin restaurant, prompted him to write to Mr Osborne and Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

He said: “I’m going to remind them of how many dangerous and near-fatal crashes there have been and also the fact that this road is a really major road between Stansted and Harwich.

“It’s just no longer fit for purpose and we have got to prioritise it.”

A Freedom of Information request by the Times last year revealed that ambulance crews are being called out to nearly one serious incident on the A120 in Braintree every week, with the majority of crashes taking place on the stretch heading towards Colchester.
