A STUDENT has appeared in court accused of assaulting a fellow student at Essex University with a sex toy while she was sleeping.

Richard Came, 21, of Park Hall Cottages, Park Hall Road, Gosfield, denied assaulting the student by penetration at Chelmsford Crown Court.

He claimed she had consented to what happened.

The alleged attack is said to have taken place in 2014 while the girl was sleeping in Came’s bed at the Wivenhoe campus after a night out.

Came was said to have boasted to friends later about what he had done and this resulted in the student being told.

Brett Weaver, prosecuting, told the court when the student then contacted the defendant over Facebook and told him he had committed a criminal offence, he had told her he was terrified and confessed to being “weird”.

The incident is said to have happened after the pair had been out on the campus and then after more drinking had gone to Came’s room where the student woke up the following morning.

Mr Weaver told the court: "She asked him what happened and he said she had just 'fallen asleep' with no mention of what might have taken place."

But the court heard he he later told friends what he had done and when they told the student she had messaged him on Facebook to ask if it was true.

The jury was told he replied : “Yeah, I am weird.”

Mr Weaver said the girl did not report the matter immediately because she had been drunk and could not remember what had happened.

Came was arrested some months later.

Mr Weaver continued : "Asked if he owned any such implements he produced a carrier bag with three of different sizes.

“In interview he said they had a kiss and a cuddle and removed all their clothing, apart from their socks and decided not to have sex because they had no condoms.”

He claimed he passed out after the incident and that when he woke up the girl was naked in the bed apart from her socks.
